Ironman doubts my commitment. He thinks I can't do it. He thinks I'll bail, or lose interest, and in his defense, he has solid historical evidence to back up his claim.

I think it's great to give it a try...even if you may ultimately end up just having a beautiful real-life prop for your air guitar riffs.
Second-hand advice: callouses are your friend--your fingertips won't get so sore once you have them.

I also bite my nails, which (I hear rumors) may make things harder...
My strummer cuts them short to play, so it might not be an issue...as long as you don't bite them so short that they hurt (which I'm wont to do).
